SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
 
The aim of Kultali Milon Tirtha Society (KMTS) for women is to empower and uplift rural and deprived communities, enable women, promote artisans through their craft and generate livelihoods. KMTS was founded in 1997 in Sundarban. It is committed to empowering women artisans by making handicrafts a viable means of home-based employment for financial independence. KMTS commenced with just some members and has now grown to a large-scale organisation that assists more than 12,000 women across 13th Gram Panchayat. A growing network of women artisans engaged in different craft forms has helped KMTS to work on a broad spectrum of rural development activities such as the formation of self-help groups or SHGs, providing fodder for drought-affected cattle, and educational programmes for children and women.
KMTS has organized about 10000 of women in 1000 SHGs & 2626 women in 202 SGSY. The SHGs have saved Rs. 2,05,760/- which have strengthened the members social & economic position. 52 SGSY moved into first grade. The members of SHG & SGSY act a leading role in different activities in village level.
 

EDUCATION
 
Kultali Milon Tirtha Society continues to play an important role in the education of children of Sundarbans. KMTS has committed to working with Governments and other stakeholders at both policy and practical levels to ensure the right to education for all children. Keeping that in mind, 18 junior high schools, a model school, an ITI and a degree college have been set up in the area of Basanti with Government support. And our organization also set up a primary school on own financial initiative namely ‘Sundarban Shishu Bikash Academy.’
 

YOUTH PLATFORMS
 
The KMTS works with the aim of joint action of the youth wing of the public. The purpose of the work is the institutional development of the youth environment of the region, increasing the capacity of the members of the organization to perform statutory duties and building public movement in the key to sustainable development of the young person. KMTS initiative to the youths took training on Solar Energy Devices, One month’s Entrepreneurship Development Programme, Seminar on Food Processing Industries, Skill Labour, Mushroom Cultivation, Sericulture, Coconut Handicrafts etc.
 

HEALTH, NUTRITION AND POPULATION
 
Kultali Milon Tirtha Society has directed their efforts towards reducing the incidence of infant, child and maternal mortality through various programs and also provides nutritional knowledge. Family planning is considered an integral part of health service; KMTS are involved in motivational activities and the distribution of contraceptives at the community level. Some programs taken for underprivileged children include providing health care services, the establishment of child rights etc.
 

ENVORNMENT, WATER & SANITATION
 
Due to poverty, lack of education and ignorance regarding hygiene, major portion of rural people of Sundarban region have been suffering from water, sanitation and hygiene for a long time. As a result, outbreak of water borne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera etc. was reported to kill enormous people in this region. With the successful strategies and programs of government and NGOs, the region has achieved tremendous success in having safe water supply and sanitation facilities over the two last decades. Kultali Milon Tirtha Society is one of the renowned NGOs of the region that has been working for providing safe water, healthy sanitation and hygiene infrastructure development and awareness raising through different projects in partnership with Govt. agencies since its inception.
KMTS has worked different programs to combat deforestation and have also exhibited notable success in afforestation programs, improving sanitation facilities and ensuring the supply of safe drinking water through the distribution of water-sealed latrines and tube wells among the beneficiaries.
 

DISASTER OR RISK MANAGEMENT
 
Many poor people are to live in vulnerable areas of the southern part of Sundarban. The vulnerability is so miserable that they have to go and settle in the newly accreted land in the Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas, which is occasionally hit by tidal bore or devastating cyclones. All the natural hazards' adverse impacts on socio-economic conditions need to be reduced for sustainable development. In realisation of this reality, the Government of West Bengal has undertaken a lot of plans and programs for disaster reduction through disaster management. Realising that sustainable development is hinged on disaster management or risk management, the Kultali Milon Tirtha Society has been organized various awareness or seminars and training for the people of Sundarbans to avoid disasters.
 

SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT AND LEGAL PROTECTION
 
Kultali Milon Tirtha Society started its journey in the establishment Sundarbans required huge socio-economic development activities for its sustainability. Being registered as a non-government development organization, KMTS took up a radical agenda for undertaking development activities in various sectors like health, education, and economic and social development. At its inception moment, KMTS focused on relief and welfare programs. Later on, it redesigned its strategies in accordance with its philosophy of poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor. With time, the range and volume of activities of the organization expanded. Presently its development programs include health, formal and non-formal education, agriculture, aquaculture, livestock, advocacy, capacity building, forestry, environmental and natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, disaster management, socio-economic development of marginalized and underprivileged people, microfinance, nutrition & hygiene education, water and sanitation, HIV/AIDS, rural development, awareness build-up, arsenic, child & women rights and protection etc.
